Director of Cruz Health Center: Middlesex School

Job Title: Director of Cruz Health Center
Salary year: July 1 to June 30

Job Summary: Faculty position in independent, coeducational, boarding/day school located in Concord, MA. Responsible for direct health care and coordination of services for student population; and for urgent and triage care for employees and families. Responsible for Health Center staffing, coverage and supervision. In collaboration with the School’s administration and contract physician, establish school policies and practices for student health care on campus and appropriate clinical protocols for the nursing staff.

Working Relationships: Reports to the Dean of Students; works closely with the Deans of Students, Academic Dean, Chief Operating Officer, Assistant Head of School and Heads of House with respect to the setting of appropriate policies and procedures. In frequent contact with parents, students, outside providers, School personnel. Supervises and evaluates nursing staff and administrative assistant and works closely with Director of Counseling, Athletic Trainer, consulting nutritionist, consulting psychiatrist.

Essential Functions of the Position:
• Provides direct care to students: evaluates, treats and manages episodic and chronic illnesses, injuries, developmental and mental health concerns. Works in collaboration with School Physician, Director of Counseling, Athletic Trainer, outside clinical primary care providers and specialists, and parents, as needed.
• Provides developmentally appropriate counseling and health and wellness teaching (including identification, prevention, care and management) around a full spectrum of health concerns, consistent with established School policies and legal requirements.
• Provides consult to school community on health-related questions or concerns.
• Maintains communication with appropriate School personnel (i.e. advisors, dorm faculty, administrators, etc.) regarding student health concerns.
• Organizes and oversees the daily operation of the Cruz Health Center, assuring 24-hour nursing coverage when school is in session. 24 hr/day on call for consultation to Health Center staff.
• Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates the Health Center’s nursing and administrative staff.
• Working with the School’s administration and medical and legal consultants, establishes, maintains and updates clinical care protocols for nursing staff, general policies and procedures for nursing staff, including medication and immunization administration, annual flu clinics, activation of emergency help, communication with School personnel and families, referrals, etc.
• Prepares annual student health packet, including current policies and required forms for parent and provider completion.
• Assures that student medical records are accurate, in compliance with legal requirements and securely stored.
• Participates fully as a faculty member in the life of a residential school.

Examples of Other Duties:
Prepares, maintains and administers an annual budget for the Cruz Health Center;
Oversees the purchase of necessary medical and office supplies, and health education materials;
Oversees coordination of health insurance information for students and families;
Serves as a member of the School’s Health Committee, Radar Committee and other committees or task forces as requested by Head of School;
Stays current with legal and regulatory health requirements and ensures school compliance;
Coordinates work with nutritionist, consulting psychiatrist and other outside consultants;
Performs other related duties as may be assigned or required.

Required Licensure, Skills and Knowledge: Current Massachusetts RN license, Masters prepared with national certification (ANCC or AANP) as Family Nurse Practitioner or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. Must have excellent clinical skills and substantial experience in adolescent health; school health and supervisory experience preferred. Must enjoy working with adolescents and their parents, and have excellent communication and administrative skills, demonstrated counseling skills, organizational and computer skills (Microsoft Office suite, electronic medical records), high energy, positive attitude, flexibility. Current CPR certification.

Special Considerations: This person must have excellent communication skills – listening, speaking and writing, as well as possessing all the requisite qualifications as a nurse practitioner.

Physical Requirements: The Director works in a comfortable office environment, without excessive noise, heat or cold. Must be available by beeper/phone to RN staff when not in the office (evenings/weekends). (S)he needs to be able to lift 10-20 pounds (files, taking students to their assigned rooms, carrying food, drink, water jugs), must be able to work at a computer and to carry on a conversation in person and on the phone.

Camp/Summer Nursing Opportunities

Hull, Massachusetts

On-Call, Part-Time Camp Nurse

We are seeking a Registered Nurse for a children's camp in Hull, MA (Region I) to be available on-call throughout the summer. It is a part-time position with a couple of hours in the morning and again before the children go to bed. Most sessions run from Sunday to Friday, and the first session begins on June 28. Responsibilities include reading each child's health record before they arrive; distributing prescription medications to those who require it; assessing and treating sicknesses and injuries that come up; and remaining on-call throughout the day in case of an emergency. Because of the nature of the on-call position, applicants must live or be staying relatively close to Hull throughout the duration of the camp sessions.

The camp is a wonderful place with a family environment, and it is the perfect opportunity for a school nurse who wants to keep working during the summertime!

The work focuses on the health and wellness of 190 young girls and a staff of 80. Two licensed nurses work together to assess for illness, monitor medication administration, and connect with a nearby physician whose medical protocols guide treatment decision-making.

Along with all the responsibility comes opportunities for fun, like swimming, canoeing, ping-pong and not having to grocery shop or cook.
