Elementary School Nurse

The Beverly Public Schools has an elementary school nurse opening for one of its excellent pre-K through 5 grade schools. The Beverly Public Schools are leaders in education based technology and are looking for a forward thinking and progressive school nurse who likes to be part of a team.

The position requires a registered nurse; experience in school nursing or public health a plus. Bachelors in nursing science and DESE licensure preferred. Current Massachusetts registered nursing license and current CPR certificate required. The Beverly nursing team consists of 7 registered nurses, a medical assistant, a licensed practical nurse, and a half time nurse leader. DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: Program Administrator(s) in conjunction with Executive Director

QUALIFICATIONS:
DESE Licensure as a School Nurse required
DESE License as Supervisor/Director preferred
A minimum of five (5) years experience in a school or public health nursing
Have knowledge of school health programs, philosophy and objectives
Clinical knowledge of the health and social needs of children and youth
Effective oral and written communication and organizational skills

RESPONSIBILITIES:
School Nursing for Evolution Program (3 days per week) - see Nurse Job Description

Nursing Services Coordination (2 days per week):
• Development and oversight of handbooks, manuals, paperwork, reports, documentation, health records, release and consent forms
• Establishes and maintains relationship with Consulting Physician
• Coordinates per diem nursing coverage
• Acts as per diem nurse when necessary and when applicable
• Provides clinical nursing supervision and evaluation of all nursing staff in contribution to comprehensive performance evaluations in conjunction with Program Administrator(s)
• Ensures all Assabet Valley Collaborative programs meet DPH and DESE health standards
• Maintains current knowledge of DPH and DESE regulations related to school health
• Coordinates the delivery of nursing services
• Determines nursing needs and recommends appropriate nursing staffing
• Ensures nursing coverage as needed in all programs
• Develops guidelines, forms and procedures in collaboration with Program Administrators in areas relevant to the provision of nursing services
• Acts in collaboration with Program Administrators to ensure the health and safety of collaborative staff and students
• Acts as a member of the Assabet Valley Collaborative Leadership Council - adding nursing/medical perspective to Assabet Valley Collaborative planning and development, and carrying out Leadership Council priorities with nursing personnel
• Plans, coordinates and/or performs in-service training as required by DESE for program approvals
* CPR, Medication Administration, First Aid, Epi-Pen, etc.
• Orients new nursing staff and per-diem nursing staff
• Participates in referral process of potential students when indicated
• Coordinates budget planning, acquisition and distribution of medical supplies and equipment in coordination with Program Administrators
• Provide consultation and training as indicated to transportation providers - regarding emergency protocol, epi-pen, etc.
• Chairs monthly nursing personnel meetings - including meeting scheduling, agenda setting, facilitation, coordination of guest presenters or speakers and in-service topics.
• Periodic records review and observation of nurses
• Coordinates communication with the host school nurses in locations housing Assabet Valley Collaborative programs.
• Executes Collaborative/Host School Nursing Agreements with Host School Districts housing AVC programs
• Consults to programs regarding public health advisories (flu, H1N1, etc) and public school responses
• Participates actively and represents Assabet Valley Collaborative at professional nursing organizations (MECNA, MASSTART, etc)
• Develop and maintain relationships with nursing preparation programs to establish internships, training relationships, placements, and recruitment for highly specialized school nursing
• Development of protocol and procedure to address mandated school-based screenings. (Vision, scoliosis, outbreaks, etc.)
• Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics and other agencies on Collaborative health matters
• Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all Assabet Valley Collaborative students
• Assigns or recruits nurses to develop a pool of per diem nurses as well as to recruit high quality nurses when there is a vacancy.
• Conducts a minimum of eight (8) annual individual supervision meetings with nursing staff
• Conducts a minimum of 8 annual nurse meetings
• Reviews and approves nurse requests for time off, reimbursement, expenditures, etc…with Program Administrator for each program
• Promotes organizational vision and mission in leadership of nursing staff.
• Makes scheduling decisions for service delivery based on individual student and school needs
• Exhibits knowledge of clinical theory and its application as it relates to the student's health needs and their relationship to educational access.
• Maintains professional and consistent oral and written communication with district personnel, central office, families, and nursing staff.
• Maintains organized files to ensure accuracy, customer satisfaction (families, teams, districts), and follow through on goals/tasks.
• Adheres to established federal, state, and local laws and regulations
• Refines and develops professional skills through in-service training, professional reading, and continuing education
• Maintains confidentiality of student educational information according to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
• Maintains confidentiality of protected health information according to HIPPA when indicated
• Works within the standard operating procedures and protocol of the AVC
• Perform other duties assigned by the Program Administrator.

EVALUATION: Evaluation to be performed in accordance with the standards developed by the Collaborative; to be compiled by the Executive Director, with feedback/contributions from Program Administrators.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Physical ability to execute job responsibilities that may include: transferring, lifting, shifting students or equipment, implementing physical restraint/crisis intervention, and managing equipment.
