January 2008 (Superintendent of Schools) (Address) Dear Superintendent (Last Name): As you know, school nurses play a complementary role with school staff in working to keep school children healthy and safe. Over the past decade, recognition of the link between health and education has increased, with greater understanding that a child must be healthy to learn and a child must learn to be healthy. The Massachusetts School Nurse Organization (MSNO) has worked to educate state lawmakers about the challenges school health service programs in the Commonwealth’s 351 cities and towns have faced, including changing family structure and support systems, social morbidities, an increased number of children with complex and diverse health care needs attending school, and students who lack comprehensive health insurance coverage and/or primary care providers. The Massachusetts Legislature has consistently supported our role and through grants and other measures improved students’ access to school nurses. In the spirit of maintaining this important dialogue and understanding among lawmakers, MSNO is planning a Massachusetts School Nurse Recognition Week public celebration during January 28 – February 1, 2008. Local state legislators are being invited to visit with school nurses in their districts this week to experience first hand how indispensable the 21st century school nurse is to our education system. Our hope is that legislators will seize this learning opportunity to discuss the health and safety issues that school nurses encounter and address in their daily practice. As a MSNO member, I am eager to participate in the MSNO Nurses Week activities.
